AVG’s malware scanner uses machine learning and heuristic analyses alongside an online malware database to detect emerging threats. During our tests it scored well with its excellent smart scan and deep scan performance. But it lags behind some competitors in its ability to detect unknown and brand new “zero-day” malware.
After a quick install, the program launches its “Smart Scan” which is a general check on your computer to identify potential threats and malware. It takes around 35 minutes to complete, looking at 430,167 files in our test systems. This is less than what competitors’ tools do however it is still a decent amount of files.
The program’s modern and sleek interface makes it easy to start scans or navigate its other features. It’s got recognizable thumbnails, headings, and other elements to assist you in understanding what each feature does. Its settings menu is also well organized and offers some options for customization, such as the ability to alter the degree of sensitivity a deep scan is, or even set up a shredder to add an option to Windows right-click menu.
Premium subscribers are able to enjoy certain additional features that aren’t included in the free version. These include “Webcam Protection”, a feature that blocks access to your camera and makes video calls more secure and secure, as well as “Sensitive Data Shield” that encrypts your personal files. AVG’s other paid programs offer extra features that are fancy, such as a performance tune-up or password manager.
The mobile app of AVG comes with several benefits, including the ability to remotely wipe or lock your Android device (Android only) and a photo vault that lets you securely share your photos.
